State elections witness surge in women candidates, Mizoram's female representation lags

In the just concluded elections for new assemblies in Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana, the proportion of women candidates was the highest so far. But the numbers are still too low. The number of women winners in these states is even lower, both in absolute terms as well as a proportion of total winners. Take the case of Mizoram, no woman got elected to the state assembly after 1987. Here’s a quick look:
