Political parties in Manipur welcome announcement of poll schedule

The ruling BJP led coalition is confident that it will win two third seats in the 60 member Manipur assembly. BJP is planning to take on a massive virtual campaign.

Political parties ruling and opposition in Manipur welcomed announcement of poll schedule. Manipur will witness two phase polls on February 27 and March 3.

The ruling BJP led coalition is confident that it will win two third seats in the 60 member Manipur assembly. BJP is planning to take on a massive virtual campaign.

Union Minister Pratima Bhowmik, who is one of the election in-charge of BJP for Manipur exuded confidence that her party is ready to win the assembly elections with a landslide victory.


Presently Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav, Assam’s Urban Development Minister Ashok Singhal, BJP’s central observer for Manipur and party’s national spokesman Sambit Patra are in Imphal.

Manipur Congress spokesman Ningombam Bupenda Meitei welcoming the ECI's poll dates announcement stated “I am confident that Congress will be back in power in Manipur.”

In 2017 Congress went out of power in Manipur after 15 years of rule. In 2017 assembly polls Congress emerged as the single largest party with 28 MLAs, Manipur assembly is 60-member assembly. Later around eight Congress MLAs left the party. BJP won 21 seats.

BJP got support from National People’s Party (NPP)and Naga People's Front (NPF) which won four seats each. One MLA each from Trinamool congress, Lok Jan Shakti party and lone independent member supported the government.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Manipur and addressed a public gathering at the Hapta Kangjeibung ground in Imphal after inaugurating 13 projects and laying foundation for nine projects with a total investment of Rs 4,815 crore.

Union Home minister Amit Shah virtually inaugurated and laid the foundation for 29 projects worth Rs 2,450 crore, from Delhi.
