Opposition seeks all-party meet on women's quota after polls

New Delhi: Opposition parties on Tuesday treaded cautiously by not outrightly opposing the government proposal to bring a bill to amend the Women's Reservation Act (Nari Shakti Vandan Act) to expedite its implementation, but tried to delay the move by seeking an all-party meeting on the matter after the upcoming assembly elections.

While the opposition is trying to avert a pre-poll punch from the ruling side, it is cautiously watching how the government deals with the ball in its court, said people familiar with the matter.

After deliberations among the floor leaders of the INDIA bloc allies on Tuesday morning on the government proposal to implement the women's quota without waiting for the completion of census and delimitation exercises, the opposition placed its demand and suggestion in a joint letter to parliamentary affairs minister Kiran Rijiju.


"All opposition parties now reiterate their demand for an all-party meeting to discuss the proposed Constitution Amendment. To make the meeting more productive, it is necessary for the government to circulate a note detailing what exactly is being proposed. The all-party meeting should be held after the current round of Assembly election is completed on April 29, 2026," the letter said.

The All India Trinamool Congress did not figure in the list of signatories.
