“Respected Dishom Guruji has left us all... I have become 'shunya' (zero) today,” Hemant Soren said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Soren had been receiving treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi since June 19 for kidney-related complications. He had suffered a stroke around six weeks ago and had been on life support for the past month.

Dr A K Bhalla, Senior Consultant, Nephrology, who was treating him, said, “He was suffering from kidney ailments and had suffered a stroke a month and a half back. He was on life support for the last one month.”
“He was declared dead at 8:56 am,” Dr Bhalla confirmed.
In an official statement, the hospital said, “Despite the best efforts of our multidisciplinary medical team, Shibu Soren passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025, with his family by his bedside. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, his loved ones, and the people of Jharkhand in this moment of grief and loss of a very popular mass leader.”

Soren led the JMM for nearly four decades and is widely regarded as the party’s founding patron. He played a key role in the movement for a separate Jharkhand state and served as its Chief Minister on three occasions.
Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar and political leaders from across party lines paid tribute to the JMM patriarch.
Congress leader and former state president Rajesh Thakur said, “He was instrumental behind the creation of a separate Jharkhand. He was the voice of the poor, Dalit and the people of the state. Jharkhand suffers from an irreparable loss today.”
