AIUDF's Ajmal asks Congress to learn from humiliating Bihar defeat, calls for a Mahagathbandhan in Assam

Ajmal who returned to Assam after a gap of several months while talking to media persons said, “There was nothing wrong with Mahagathbandhan in Bihar, Congress strategy was faulty. If opposition parties want to save themselves in Assam, they must resolve their differences and come together. If they don’t come together, they must be prepared to keep on crying for another five years.”
He clarified that AIUDF is not saying that it wants some parties to come with it, but that AIUDF is prepared to fight the polls on its own.”
Ajmal said, “RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav worked tirelessly for the last five holding several rallies each day, Prime minister Narendra Modi had done several rallies. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi let down Tejashwi. There was hardly any coordination among Mahagathbandhan leaders in Bihar.”
After the Assam assembly polls of 2021 the core committee of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has resolved to sever ties with AIUDF and move out AIUDF from the Mahajot (Grand alliance).
In 2021 Congress cobbled up ten parties led grand alliances.
On November 12, seven Opposition parties announced the revival of the Asom Sonmilito Morcha, a front to take on the BJP in the 2026 assembly polls.
Leaders of the Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Raijor Dal, CPI(M) and three other parties came together at a meeting held at the Assam Legislative Assembly Secretariat, resolving to fight the polls under a unified banner.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief Gaurav Gogoi had said, " To fight BJP’s atrocities and the injustice of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, we have all united to provide relief to the people of Assam. We are coming together to contest the 2026 Assembly elections to liberate the citizens of Assam."
Earlier these parties have cobbled similar fronts however owing to rift the alliance got scattered.
Assam is likely to go to assembly polls early next year.
