Most exit polls for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections released on Wednesday gave Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) a slight edge over the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). After the Bengal exit polls were released, Bangladesh MP Akhtar Hussain stated that if the BJP forms a government in the state, it would lead to a refugee crisis in Dhaka.

In a video doing the rounds on social media, the Bangladeshi MP is purportedly heard saying that exit polls showing BJP victory in West Bengal is a big worry for Bangladesh. He says if the BJP wins, illegal Bangladeshis will be thrown back to Bangladesh, creating crisis for them.

Bengal exit polls prediction a worry in Dhaka

Speaking in Parliament, Member Secretary of the National Citizen Party Akhtar Hussain said that the West Bengal exit poll prediction has become a cause of worry in Dhaka. He warned that if the BJP forms the government in West Bengal, it could push alleged undocumented migrants back into Bangladesh, potentially triggering a refugee crisis.

What did the MP say?

“If exit polls in West Bengal show a BJP victory and if the party forms the government, they will push all those ‘Kanglu’ people into Bangladesh. This will create a major humanitarian, economic and refugee crisis for us. We are concerned about this," he said in the video.

The issue of illegal immigration has been a major talking point in the West Bengal elections, with BJP leaders frequently raising it. The remarks come amid recent tensions, including Dhaka expressing displeasure over statements by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Bangladeshi immigrants.

West Bengal Elections 2026: Exit Polls

The poll of polls pointed to a neck-and-neck contest between the two main rivals, estimating around 145 seats each for the BJP and the TMC in the 294-member Assembly, with others likely to secure about four seats. The exit poll by Chanakya Strategies has projected 150-160 Assembly seats in the BJP's corner while placing Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) with 130-140 seats. According to People’s Pulse, the TMC could emerge ahead with 177–187 seats, while the BJP is projected at 95–110

According to exit poll projections by Matrize, the BJP is winning the West Bengal Assembly polls with 146-161, while TMC is projected to win 125 to 140 seats.
