Large parts of north, central, and east India are set for another day of heavy rain on September 5, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of isolated very heavy rainfall over East Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh, along with heavy rain across several other states including Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.

The rain activity is being driven by a well-marked low pressure area over central parts of northern Madhya Pradesh and adjoining south Uttar Pradesh, which IMD says will remain quasi-stationary for the next two days. A western disturbance affecting the Himalayan region and an associated monsoon trough running from Sri Ganganagar to Tripura are also contributing to the widespread rain activity across the country.

Will it rain in Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi?


Yes. IMD has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on September 5, a day after the region recorded very heavy rain, with Palam logging 7 cm of rainfall on September 4 alone. However, IMD's subdivision-wise outlook shows rain intensity in this belt is expected to drop from "fairly widespread" to merely "isolated" by September 7.

Will it rain in Punjab?

Rain is likely, though IMD has categorised Punjab under "scattered" rainfall for September 5, a step down from the wider spread seen in neighbouring Haryana. Thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning is expected at isolated places, with the intensity expected to ease further to isolated levels by September 7.

Will it rain in Rajasthan?

East Rajasthan is among the worst-affected regions on September 5, with IMD warning of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall. West Rajasthan, by contrast, is expected to see only isolated rain through the week, continuing a pattern of much lower rainfall than the eastern part of the state.

Will it rain in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh?

Yes, scattered rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad on September 5. Himachal Pradesh is expected to see heavy rainfall at isolated places on the same day, with the region also under a flash flood risk warning for Chamba, Kangra, Sirmaur and Shimla districts due to already saturated soils.

Will it rain in Uttarakhand?

Uttarakhand faces one of the most sustained rain spells in the country, with widespread rainfall expected to continue right through September 10. IMD has also issued a flash flood risk warning for eleven districts in the state, including Dehradun, Nainital, Uttarkashi and Pithoragarh, over the next 24 hours.

Will it rain in Uttar Pradesh?

West Uttar Pradesh is expected to see fairly widespread rain on September 5, continuing the spell that began the previous day, while East Uttar Pradesh will see comparatively lighter, scattered rainfall before its own heavier spell arrives between September 6 and 8.

Will it rain in West Bengal and Sikkim?

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are forecast to see widespread rain continuously through September 5, part of a spell that IMD expects to persist all the way to September 10. Gangetic West Bengal will also see fairly widespread rain on the same day.

Will it rain in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh?

West Madhya Pradesh faces isolated very heavy rainfall risk on September 5, while East Madhya Pradesh is expected to see fairly widespread rain with isolated heavy spells. Chhattisgarh is likely to see scattered rainfall on the day.

What about the northeast and other regions?

Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura will continue to see widespread rain with isolated heavy spells on September 5. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are expected to witness thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph, while parts of Interior Karnataka will see similar wind conditions through September 6.

What IMD has advised

IMD's impact bulletin warns that the ongoing rain could cause tree branches to break, damage kutcha houses and weak structures, disrupt road and rail traffic, and trigger localised landslides and waterlogging in low-lying areas across the affected states. People have been advised to avoid sheltering under trees during thunderstorms, stay away from objects that conduct electricity, and keep a watch on weather updates for their region.
