Reducing phone use to essential tasks for three days can boost brain power: Study
A study by German scientists revealed that limiting smartphone use for 72 hours can significantly change brain activity related to addiction. This was shown through MRI scans and psychological tests conducted on young adults aged 18 to 30 before a...

Brain scans reveal changes in neural activity
Before and after the smartphone restriction period, the participants underwent MRI scans and psychological tests. The research aimed to examine how limiting phone use affects brain activity related to addiction-related neurotransmitter systems.“We used a longitudinal approach to investigate effects of smartphone restriction in smartphone users,” the researchers stated in their published paper. “Associations between changes of brain activation over time and addiction-related neurotransmitter systems were found.”
Images used to study brain response
During the scans, participants were shown various images, including pictures of smartphones in different states and neutral images such as boats and flowers. The study suggests that even a short period without smartphones can lead to changes in brain activity, offering insights into the impact of digital devices on neural patterns.Need for further research
The researchers noted that their findings highlight the close link between smartphone use and social interaction, which are difficult to separate. “Our data does not disentangle craving for smartphone use and craving for social interaction, nowadays two tightly intertwined processes,” they wrote. “Although our data shows relatively robust findings without unraveling these processes, future studies should clearly aim to address this aspect.”The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
