India celebrates January 12 as National Youth Day to mark the birth anniversary of spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda. Born on the day in 1863, he was one of the country's best authors and religious teachers.

Vivekananda was a Hindu monk, a philosopher, and the ‘chief disciple of the Indian mystic Ramakrishna’. He was born as Narendranath Datta in Kolkata.



He had several achievements to his name and soon turned into one of the most loved and followed leaders. Unfortunately, he died at the young age of 39, on 4 July 1902.

In a span of only a few years, Vivekananda gained major respect. January 12 is also referred to as Yuva Diwas. The day was introduced and began as an annual celebration by the Indian Government in 1984.

This year, the theme for National Youth Day 2025 is ‘Youth for a Sustainable Future: Shaping the Nation with Resilience and Responsibility.’
