Ways to lower blood pressure
Untreated high blood pressure (BP) can result in serious health complications. According to the American Heart Association, undiagnosed or unmanaged hypertension can become a leading cause of heart attack, stroke, heart failure, vision impairment, kidney disease or failure, plaque accumulation in arteries, and other conditions. This makes timely treatment essential. While medication and medical consultation should always be the primary approach, adopting heart-healthy lifestyle habits also plays a crucial role in managing BP levels.

Cardiologist Shares ‘Fastest Way’ to Lower BP Naturally

In a February 25 Instagram post, Dr Sanjay Bhojraj, a board-certified interventional cardiologist with over two decades of experience, spoke about what he described as the ‘fastest way to lower your blood pressure naturally’ — a method that takes less than two minutes daily.

He explained that when his own blood pressure rises during the day, he does not turn to caffeine. Instead, he regulates it through controlled breathing.

The 2-Minute Breathing Technique

To lower BP using this method, he recommends:
  • Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds.
  • Exhale for 6 to 8 seconds.
  • Repeat for 2 minutes.

How Breathing Helps Reduce Blood Pressure

According to Dr Bhojraj, longer exhalations stimulate the body’s calming response. He explained, “That lowers vascular resistance and, in many people, drops systolic pressure within minutes.”

He further emphasised that the technique is backed by research, not just theory. “Multiple clinical studies on slow breathing and device-guided breathing have shown average systolic reductions of 5 to 10 mmHg when practised consistently. That’s comparable to what some first-line interventions achieve.”

BP Is More Than Just a Salt Issue

The cardiologist also pointed out that blood pressure is influenced by the nervous system as much as by salt intake. He added, “Stress load, insulin resistance, poor sleep, and visceral fat all feed it.”

He concluded by advising individuals to monitor their BP readings consistently for two weeks to observe potential improvements.
