A Gen Z employee’s request to work from home for just one day reportedly turned into a tense exchange with HR after he was later questioned for ignoring an urgent client call at 10 pm, as per a viral X post narrating a corporate employee's experience. The employee had been told that company policy required staff to work from the office, but when HR expected him to remain available after hours, he asked why flexibility applied when the company needed it but not when he did.

According to the account, the employee had asked HR if he could work remotely for one day because he had a personal appointment in the afternoon. HR rejected the request, citing company policy and saying employees were expected to work from the office.

The employee accepted the decision and reported to the office at 8:30 am the following morning. He worked his full shift before leaving at 5 pm.

Employee questioned over 10 pm client call

Three days later, HR reportedly called the employee into a meeting to discuss an incident from Tuesday night.

HR told him that one of the company’s biggest clients had called him at around 10 pm and that a text message had also been sent afterward. The employee acknowledged seeing both the missed call and message the next morning but said he had not responded because it was already 10 pm.

HR reportedly pointed out that the client had an urgent issue and that the employee was among those responsible for the account. When the employee said his responsibility applied during his working hours, HR argued that client-facing positions sometimes required flexibility.

The employee then referred back to his earlier request to work from home.

‘You told me work happens at the office’

The employee asked HR what he had been told when he requested remote work for one day.

HR replied that company policy did not allow employees to work from home and that everyone was expected to be physically present in the office.

The employee then argued that, under that explanation, his workday had ended when he left the office at 5 pm.

HR responded that this was not what the policy meant, explaining that employees were expected to be physically present during normal working hours but could be required to respond to urgent client matters afterward.

The employee then questioned why flexibility appeared to apply when the company needed it, but not when an employee requested it.

Employee asks for after-hours expectations in writing

Rather than arguing that employees should never work beyond regular hours, the employee reportedly asked HR to provide the after-hours expectations for his role in writing.

He explained that if he was expected to remain available for urgent client matters at 10 pm, he wanted to know that expectation in advance rather than being questioned later for not responding.

The exchange reportedly left HR with little to say before the employee returned to his desk.

The account ultimately centred on the employee’s request for clarity over workplace expectations, particularly whether flexibility around working hours should apply only when required by the company or also when employees have legitimate personal commitments.
