A manager’s attempt to control an employee’s coffee consumption has sparked an online discussion about unreasonable workplace rules and micromanagement. In a social media post, an employee described how their boss had prohibited staff from drinking coffee during working hours, including beverages brought from home in thermoses or purchased in cans. The manager reportedly suggested that the employee start work an hour later instead, despite the coffee machine being just a 20-second walk away.

The employee said colleagues were too intimidated to challenge the rule and admitted that the situation was becoming frustrating. Although they want to stay in their specialised trade to develop their skills and advance their career, the manager’s behaviour has left them questioning the workplace environment.

Boss bans coffee breaks, employee says colleagues are afraid to speak up

The employee said they had never encountered such a restriction at a previous job, adding that some workplaces had even encouraged them to visit the coffee machine when they needed a boost. At their current workplace, however, neither thermos coffee nor canned coffee was permitted during working hours, reportedly because it could interfere with work.

The employee described the restriction as a relatively small issue but said it had become more troubling because several people had warned them about the manager since they joined.

They said they intended to comply with the rules until signing their contract after completing the first month. Despite the frustration, the employee made clear they did not plan to resign, explaining that the specialised nature of the job offered valuable opportunities to learn and build a career.

Employee points to clock changes as another example of micromanagement

The coffee restriction was not the only behaviour that had unsettled the employee. They also alleged that the manager had set the workplace clock three minutes ahead for an unexplained reason.

According to the post, colleagues repeatedly corrected the clock, only for the manager to change it back again. The employee cited the recurring dispute as another example of the difficult dynamic at work and said it was hard to trust a boss who behaved this way.

Social media users tell employee to set boundaries

The post prompted commenters to share advice, with several urging the employee to document the manager’s conduct and consider looking for another job.

One user pointed to the role of leadership in workplace satisfaction, writing, “People don't quit bad jobs, they quit bad bosses. Keep looking, you'll find something better.”

Another questioned the logic behind banning coffee, arguing that a large part of the workforce relies on it and that denying employees a coffee break would be difficult to accept.

A third commenter suggested that the employee’s specialised skills might make replacing them challenging. They also encouraged workers to establish boundaries and push back against unreasonable demands.

Another user called the restriction unjustified, arguing that asking someone to start an hour later would not eliminate their desire for coffee. The commenter added that saying “No.” could be enough when responding to an unreasonable demand.
