Diesel at Rs 192 per litre? Here's what the Petroleum Ministry has said amid the Iran war oil crisis

Amid the ongoing West Asia crisis, the government has stepped in to clarify that the prices of regular petrol and diesel have remained changed at Rs 94.77/litre and Rs 87.67/litre in Delhi, respectively. However, with global petroleum prices rising by up to 100% over the past month, PSU oil marketing companies are currently facing under-recoveries of ₹24.40 per litre on petrol and ₹104.99 per litre on diesel at the retail selling price level as of April 1, 2026, the Petroleum Ministry said. This means the diesel price could have gone upto Rs 192.66 per litre and petrol upto 119.17 per litre, respectively.

These decisions are in line with the government’s commitment to shield Indian consumers from the impact of soaring international fuel prices.


"It is also clarified that regular petrol and diesel prices— the fuel that India runs on — are unchanged i.e. at Rs 94.77/litre and Rs 87.67/litre in Delhi. With global petroleum prices up by upto 100% in the last 1 month, PSU OMCs are incurring under-recoveries of Rs 24.40/litre on petrol and Rs 104.99/litre on diesel at RSP level as on 01.04.2026. These decisions are in line with Hon’ble PM @narendramodi Ji’s commitment to protect the Indian citizens from soaring international prices," the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said in a post on X.

"The recent Rs 2/litre revision applies only to premium petrol variants — XP95, Power95, Speed — high-octane performance products, whose prices are revised on fortnightly basis and whose sales by volume are 2% and 5% of total volume. They are purchased by motorists, at a premium, by choice. Every pump in India continues to offer regular petrol and diesel at unchanged prices, even as prices in countries all over the world have risen by 30-50%," the post reads.

Premium petrol, diesel price hiked

PSU oil marketing major Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has increased the prices of its premium fuels in the national capital. XP100 petrol is now priced at Rs 160 per litre, up from Rs 149 earlier. The high-octane fuel is primarily used in luxury vehicles and high-performance motorcycles to enhance engine efficiency. Similarly, the company has raised the price of Xtra Green diesel (premium diesel), which now costs Rs 92.99 per litre in Delhi, compared to Rs 91.49 previously.

Petrol, Diesel prices today

There has been no change in regular petrol and diesel prices, which remained stable across major Indian cities despite a rise in global crude oil benchmarks amid escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Oil marketing companies have maintained stability in auto fuel prices even as other petroleum products witnessed sharp increases.

In Delhi, petrol continues to retail at Rs 94.72 per litre, while diesel is priced at Rs 87.62 per litre. In Mumbai, petrol costs Rs 103.44 per litre and diesel Rs 89.97 per litre.

Meanwhile, commercial LPG prices were hiked by Rs 195.50 per cylinder, while aviation turbine fuel (ATF) rates were more than doubled, crossing the Rs 2 lakh per kilolitre mark.

Globally, crude oil prices have risen sharply amid ongoing tensions in West Asia. US President Donald Trump has indicated that the American military could halt attacks on Iran within the next three weeks, signalling a possible de-escalation.
