Amarnath Yatra: Health and eligibility rules

Given the high altitude and difficult terrain, strict health guidelines have been introduced. Only individuals between 13 and 70 years of age are eligible. Women with pregnancy more than 6 weeks wil not be eligible for yatra registration. All pilgrims must submit a Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) issued after April 8, 2026, from authorised doctors or medical institutions. The certificate will be verified before the final yatra permit is issued.

Once registered, devotees will receive a system-generated Yatra Permit mentioning the date, chosen route, and entry gate timing. In a new safety measure, every pilgrim will also be issued an RFID card for real-time tracking during the journey.

Two main routes to the Amarnath cave

Pilgrims can choose between two trekking routes:
  • Pahalgam Route: Approximately 48 km long, this is the longer but more gradual route and is considered safer for first-time pilgrims.
  • Baltal Route: Only 14 km long, this shorter route is steeper and more physically demanding, usually preferred by experienced trekkers.
