When Stability Starts to Feel Like Stagnation

Initially stable environments can lead to a perception of reduced growth, even when progress is occurring. Organizations often reinforce this stability by valuing consistency and reliability, potentially trapping individuals in familiar roles. Thi...

When Stability Starts to Feel Like Stagnation
There comes a point at which things become stable to a degree that is hard to dispute initially. It is clear what you have to do; it does not seem very difficult, and there is nothing out of the ordinary happening. From an external perspective, it is quite easy to assume that this is where one ought to be. However, from within this state of being, it could easily turn around and take on a new direction. Things are no longer fresh; instead, they seem familiar.

You See Reduced Growth Visibility Over Time

According to research found in the Journal of Vocational Behavior (2020), career satisfaction does not only depend on one’s successes but rather on their perceived growth as well. The lack of clear changes can make one perceive their progress differently, regardless of how successful they are. Progress continues to happen, but the way in which it is perceived changes. One might be achieving their goals all the time; however, it will become increasingly difficult for him/her to see such a development.

How Does Stability Get Reinforced in Organizations?

There is an underlying tendency for workplaces to appreciate consistency in various ways. For instance, when employees show themselves to be consistent by proving their dependability, there will be instances in which the same duties are entrusted to them. In the Organizational Science journal, the article from 2018 mentions the idea of reliability becoming linked to role continuity, where people remain within roles they are seen to perform well in. Here, it is possible to get into a vicious cycle.

Work Starts Feeling Different

It is unlikely for someone to feel stagnant because of an abrupt awareness. Instead, there are small signs. The absence of curiosity, lack of a pressing urge to discover things, or even the feeling that nothing much has happened despite the passage of time. One does their work but not out of passion. There is no identifiable challenge to solve anymore.

Rethinking How You Look at Stability

Stability does not impose any limits by itself; it brings order and certainty, both of which are often required in various professions. However, what matters here is the change in perception through which this stability is viewed. If an individual is surrounded by a stable environment for a prolonged period of time, he or she may start viewing this condition as repetition rather than stability. This does not mean that understanding the difference will solve anything.
