If you’re a Texas voter and haven’t registered yet, you’re almost out of time. The last day to sign up for the 2026 midterm election is Monday, October 5, no exceptions. That’s your deadline for voting in the big Nov. 3 showdown. And honestly, this deadline lands right when election officials are wrestling with glitches in the state’s voter registration system.

So, here’s what you need to know before the clock runs out, according to KSAT, Houston Chronicle, and Dallas News.

How do you register in Texas?

First-timers can start the Texas voter registration application online, but then you’ve got to print it, sign it, and get it to your county’s voter registrar. If you mail it, make sure it’s postmarked by Oct. 5. Worried the post office won’t stamp it on time? Ask for a manual postmark at a USPS retail counter. Or just hand-deliver the form to your county’s voter registration office.

Want to check if you’re already signed up? Hit up the Texas Secretary of State’s website to double-check your status. People in Bexar County, the elections office is at 1103 S. Frio, Suite 100. For everyone else, just contact your own county registration office.

What’s actually on the Texas ballot?

Nov. 3 isn’t just another election, it’s loaded. You’ve got big races like the U.S. Senate between James Talarico (Democrat) and Ken Paxton (Republican), plus the governor’s race featuring incumbent Greg Abbott (Republican) against Gina Hinojosa (Democrat).

Local contests carry weight, too. In Harris County, Letitia Plummer and Orlando Sanchez want the job of County Judge since Lina Hidalgo’s stepping aside. Bexar County voters pick their next county judge and district attorney.

Early voting kicks off Oct. 19 and rolls through Oct. 30. If you want to vote by mail, circle Oct. 23 to send in your application.

What about Texas voter ID rules?

You don’t need your voter registration card at the polls, but you do need a valid photo ID. Options include a Texas driver’s license, state Election Identification Certificate, personal ID card, handgun license, U.S. military ID, citizenship certificate with photo, or passport.

Lost your card? Ask your county voter registrar for a replacement, just send a written request.

Why all the warnings about registration issues?

This year’s deadline feels extra tense because the Texas Election Administration Management system (TEAM) has had its fair share of headaches. Dallas Morning News reported that a software snafu left at least 590,000 registrations hanging, never reaching county officials. Plus, county teams flagged more system trouble.

In Dallas County, The News found 160 mismatches out of 11,000 voter records—registration status, county info, or voters who couldn’t even be found in the state system. Paul Adams, Dallas County Elections Administrator, put it bluntly, "If you’re appearing in one place and you’re questioning what your status is when you’re seeing it someplace else, there is absolutely a concern there."

The Texas Association of County Elections Officials agrees. Kristin Miles, their president, says TEAM’s technical issues and public portal glitches could leave voters scratching their heads.

Still, counties keep backup records and can offer provisional ballots if your status isn’t clear on Election Day. The association said these glitches trace back to “fundamental system architecture failures” by the state’s database vendor.

Secretary of State spokesperson Alicia Pierce pointed out that Texas has already pulled off seven elections since rolling out the new TEAM system, promising updates soon to tackle county complaints.

If you’re not sure about your registration, election officials say double-check online and call your county office if anything looks weird.
