Michele Tafoya spent nearly three decades asking questions on the sidelines of some of American football’s biggest games. The former NBC sportscaster is taking her direct approach into politics as a Republican candidate for the Senate in Minnesota. She retired from sports broadcasting after Super Bowl LVI in February 2022, as per Minnesota Reformer and official website of Michele Tafoya.

She is now seeking to build a career that focuses on accountability, government spending and family-focused policies. However, her campaign has also drawn attention to her personal wealth, with financial disclosures putting her assets between $10.7 million and $37.9 million.

Tafoya built her reputation covering the NFL for major networks, including ABC, NBC and ESPN. Her final NBC Sunday Night Football broadcast came at Super Bowl LVI on February 13, 2022. It was her fifth Super Bowl assignment.

She retired the following day after covering 327 NFL games, a record for national primetime games by a sideline reporter.

Her career brought four Sports Emmy Awards for Outstanding Sports Personality – Sports Reporter. She was also a finalist for the award every year since it was introduced in 2011. Tafoya received two Gracie Awards from American Women in Radio and Television.

The San Francisco Chronicle once described her as “widely recognized as the best sideline reporter in sports.” Tafoya said leaving the job was not an easy decision, but she felt ready for something different.

“Some may consider me crazy to walk away from one of the most coveted roles in sports television,” she said at the time of her retirement. “But I couldn’t ignore that little voice anymore after what we’ve all endured over the last few years.”

She later moved into political and cultural commentary, including hosting a podcast on the Salem Podcast Network until January.

Why is Tafoya running for the Senate?

Tafoya’s campaign focuses on government accountability, fiscal responsibility, border security, law and order, and reducing taxes and regulations. She has also made fighting fraud a key part of her message. Her political pitch centres on the idea that Minnesota families deserve honest government and policies that put their needs first. She has criticized corruption and fraud scandals that have brought attention to the state.

Her comments on rising gas prices however have sparked debate, about how she connects with voters struggling with expenses.

Tafoya said Americans could respond to higher prices linked to the war in Iran with a “stiff upper lip” and “one less trip to Starbucks.” She has stood by that position. In an interview last month with KSTP, she said paying higher prices was part of supporting American troops.

“I do think we need to be patriotic about this,” Tafoya said.

How wealthy is Michele Tafoya compared with Peggy Flanagan?

Tafoya’s financial disclosure lists assets ranging from $10.7 million to $37.9 million. The figures include investments spread across retirement accounts linked to her broadcasting career and her husband Mark Vandersall’s work in private wealth management.

The disclosure does not include the value of the couple’s primary residence or what they owe on their mortgages. According to county property records, they bought a five-bedroom home in Edina for $2.2 million in 2008 and a property in Miromar Lakes, Florida, for $425,000 in 2015.

Tafoya reported no income last year, despite previously hosting a political podcast.

Her Democratic-Farmer-Labor opponent, Peggy Flanagan, reported assets ranging from $990,000 to $2.7 million. Flanagan earned $129,000 from her role as Minnesota lieutenant governor year according to her disclosure.

Flanagan often draws on her own childhood experiences to discuss the cost of living. Flanagan was raised by a working mother in subsidized housing. She has made healthcare, childcare and food assistance central to her economic message.

“I know who I’m fighting for,” Flanagan said at a rally with Sen. Bernie Sanders. “I’m fighting for the mom standing at the checkout counter trying to stretch 20 bucks through the end of the month.”

Tafoya’s wealth may become part of the debate as voters weigh the candidates’ backgrounds and plans for Minnesota. Political science professor David Sturrock of Southwest Minnesota State University told the Minnesota Star Tribune that candidates need to understand voters’ financial concerns, though he also noted that elections are often shaped by brief impressions rather than close scrutiny of financial disclosures.
