U.S. elections Exit polls on November 5: How accurate are they? Here's all you need to know

Exit polls are surveys conducted on election day to determine how and why people voted. These initial results, which were released at 5 p.m. ET, will be adjusted throughout the night.

On election night, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will be closely monitoring every development following months of rallies, interviews, speeches, and town hall events.

The networks' release of the exit poll's preliminary results at 5 p.m. ET will be a significant event.

According to a report by the Telegraph, the survey's results will be adjusted throughout the evening as additional information from polling stations across the US becomes available, and it will not immediately predict the outcome of the election.

However, it might offer early clues as to which campaign has been successful in getting supporters to the polls and which is performing poorly or exceptionally well with important voter groups.

What is an exit poll?

An exit poll is a survey that determines how voters voted in an election and their reasons for doing so. It has three parts: early voting, which occurs in person in the weeks leading up to the election, and mail voting, which occurs on election day.

The final part targets voters who vote early or by mail and asks 20 questions about their vote, demographic factors, and reasons for voting. Results can only be reported after the embargo period ends at 5 pm ET on election day.

Exit polls are not always accurate, as they are adjusted several times over the night due to polling locations being open, as quoted in a report by the Telegraph.

Early poll results may not represent the wider electorate, as older voters tend to be older and Republicans have an edge among those over 50 years old.

As more voters are added to the sample, exit polls move closer to the final result, but can be altered by modelling.

FAQs

What is an exit poll?
An exit poll asks voters who they voted for and why. It covers in-person and early voting, as well as mail ballots, and provides insights into voter behaviour.
