Scientists uncover surprising factor that slashes blood pressure, boosts heart health, and it's simple
Scientists found beetroot juice significantly lowers blood pressure in the elderly. This effect was not seen in younger individuals. The key difference lies in the oral microbiome. Beetroot juice altered mouth bacteria, reducing harmful types and ...

Recently, researchers discovered that beetroot juice had a reassuring effect on the elderly. Beetroot juice significantly decreases blood pressure in older adults, according to research findings. The University of Exeter, according to Good News Network, carried out earlier studies that had "shown [how] a high nitrate diet can reduce blood pressure … [and] the risk of heart disease," reported TCD.
Beetroot juice is particularly important for those of older ages because it is high in nitrates and other nutrients that support a healthy heart. When older adults drank a concentrated 'shot' of beetroot juice twice a day for two weeks, their blood pressure decreased – an effect not seen in a younger group used for comparison," according to Good News Network.
What conclusions did the study draw concerning seniors and beetroot juice?
The primary distinction between the age groups was how the oral biomes of subjects under thirty and those over sixty changed. In turn, the older test subjects "experienced a notable decrease in the mouth bacteria Prevotella … along with an increase in the growth of bacteria known to benefit health, such as Neisseria." This was because the juice itself altered the composition of what was in their mouths by suppressing bacteria that could become harmful, as per a report by TCD.

Anni Vanhatalo, a professor at the University of Exeter and the study's author, stressed that "encouraging older adults to consume more nitrate-rich vegetables could have significant long term health benefits," noting, however, "that if you don't like beetroot, there are many nitrate-rich alternatives like spinach, rocket, fennel, celery, and kale," as per a report by TCD.
