How the V-2 rocket was developed?
The V-2 programme was connected to the German rocket research centre at Peenemünde on the Baltic coast. German engineers worked there on rockets that could travel long distances. The British bombing of Peenemünde in August 1943 led Nazi authorities to move much of the production programme underground. Machinery and production operations were moved to the Nordhausen area in central Germany.The new underground production complex became known as Mittelwerk. The human cost of production

The work included excavation, transportation, assembly and other factory tasks. The Mittelbau-Dora system eventually included many subcamps. They worked for long hours while facing hunger, disease, exhaustion and violence. Prisoners accused of sabotage could be executed. More than 200 prisoners were publicly hanged for alleged sabotage.
The death toll was more than 20,000. Many prisoners died from disease, hunger, exhaustion, abuse and executions. Thousands more died during the evacuations at the end of the war. Wernher von Braun was one of the central figures in the German rocket programme. He served as technical director of the V-2 project. By 1945, Germany was losing the war. The V-2 production system continued until the final months of the conflict. As Allied forces approached, the SS began evacuating prisoners from Mittelbau-Dora. Prisoners were sent away by train and on forced marches. Many died during these evacuations.American troops reached Nordhausen and Mittelbau-Dora in April 1945. They found dead prisoners and survivors suffering from starvation and disease. The US Holocaust Memorial Museum records that the 104th Infantry Division reached the camp on April 11, 1945, and found thousands of corpses and hundreds of surviving prisoners. The liberation exposed the conditions under which the V-2 programme had operated.
Why the V-2 remains part of rocket history?
The V-2 occupies two parts of history. From a technology perspective, it demonstrated a form of long-range ballistic flight that became important to later missile development. Its liquid-fuel propulsion, guidance and flight systems influenced work in the United States and Soviet Union.From a historical perspective, the V-2 is linked to Nazi Germany, forced labor and the concentration camp system. The underground Mittelwerk factory was not simply a military production facility. It was part of a system in which prisoners were forced to work under conditions that caused thousands of deaths.
The technology later contributed to developments in missile and space engineering, but that later history does not remove the conditions under which the weapon was produced.
