Between 1820 and 1821, he taught Greek at the Metropolitan School in Bucharest. In 1821, Tudor Vladimirescu began a revolution in Wallachia. Poenaru joined the movement. He was not successful as a fighter, but Vladimirescu noticed his education and ability.

Poenaru became Vladimirescu's personal assistant. He worked on the army's manifesto. The document is considered an early Romanian newspaper, although some historical details about this description are disputed. Poenaru was later sent on a diplomatic mission. This meant he was away when Vladimirescu was captured and killed. After Vladimirescu's death, Poenaru took refuge in Sibiu.




His studies in Vienna and France

In 1822, Poenaru received a scholarship to study in Vienna. During his time there, he learned about measuring instruments and micrometers. These tools were not widely known in the engineering field in Wallachia at the time. He also studied languages. His studies included Greek, Latin, French, Italian and English. His interest in education remained central to his life. In a letter to his family, he wrote about learning as one of the greatest pleasures a person could experience.

In 1824, Wallachian ruler Grigore Ghica granted Poenaru another scholarship. The arrangement required him to return home after completing his studies and share his knowledge through teaching. In 1826, he travelled to France and entered the École Polytechnique in Paris. It was during this period that he created the fountain pen.


Poenaru's wider work in Romania

The fountain pen was only one part of Poenaru's career. He worked as an educator and helped organize Romania's educational system. He also worked in agriculture and animal science. He was involved in the creation of institutions and organizations in Bucharest. These included the Philharmonic Society, the Botanical Gardens and the National Museum of Antiquities.
