QQQ stock today falls over 5%: Why Nvidia (NVDA), Qualcomm (QCOM), Intel (INTC) and Marvell (MRVL) are dragging down Invesco QQQ Trust

QQQ stock: The Invesco QQQ Trust fell more than 5% on Thursday as technology and semiconductor stocks came under heavy selling pressure following the Democrats’ sweeping victory in the US midterm elections.

QQQ Stock Today: Invesco QQQ Trust Shares Are Down

The ETF dropped near $655, extending its recent decline as investors reacted to concerns about AI data center spending and a fresh setback for the semiconductor industry. Qualcomm's disappointing fourth-quarter smartphone chip sales added to the pressure, while Nvidia, Marvell Technology and Intel also extended their recent losses.

The election results have brought renewed attention to the outlook for AI infrastructure investment. Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress and key governorships, including Texas, which accounts for a significant share of AI data center spending and development.

Why Is QQQ Stock Falling Today

Investors are concerned that a Democratic-led slowdown in data center construction could hurt companies involved in supplying AI infrastructure and cloud services.

Analysts have warned that delays or restrictions on data center projects could weigh on earnings estimates for AI infrastructure stocks and cloud companies. The AI sector has already lost roughly $5 trillion in market value since early October, according to Investing.com.

Political uncertainty has added to the pressure. Market commentators have pointed to the possibility of two years of gridlock between a Democratic-led Congress and the Trump White House, with investors weighing how disagreements could affect technology-related businesses.

QQQ has been caught in the sell-off because of its substantial exposure to technology stocks. Technology accounts for 57.1% of the fund's classifiable stock holdings, while its 10 largest positions represent 46.8% of its assets.

Qualcomm's Sales Miss Adds to Pressure on Chip Stocks

The semiconductor sell-off intensified after Qualcomm missed Wall Street estimates for fourth quarter smartphone chip sales. Its shares fell sharply in premarket trading, putting additional pressure on other chipmakers.

Nvidia, Marvell Technology and Intel also extended their recent declines. All three are meaningful holdings in QQQ, adding to the losses facing the ETF.

The weakness was also visible across the broader market. The Nasdaq Composite fell 3.5% during the session, a 1.9% decline in the S&P 500 and a 0.9% drop in the Dow Jones.

QQQ Added Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft Shares on Tuesday

Despite the decline in its market price, QQQ's reported portfolio activity showed that the fund increased its positions across all 101 holdings on Tuesday, according to a GuruFocus report.

QQQ recorded $239.6 million in net buying activity, with no positions reduced or sold. The fund also did not add any new stocks, as all the purchases went toward existing holdings.

Nvidia was the largest addition. QQQ bought 94,619 shares worth $19.6 million, bringing the company's weight in the portfolio to 8.16%.

Apple was the next-largest purchase, with 57,302 shares valued at $19 million, the fund also added 29,155 Microsoft shares worth $15.2 million. Amazon and Micron Technology received additions worth $10.6 million and $10.5 million, respectively.

QQQ had $464.63 billion in assets under management. Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Micron were its five largest holdings.

QQQ Trades Below Its 52-Week High

At $655, QQQ was trading well below its 52-week high of $762.86 as technology and semiconductor shares continued to face selling pressure.

The fund's portfolio is heavily weighted toward large technology companies, with technology accounting for 57.1% of its classifiable stock holdings. Its exposure to major chipmakers has left it vulnerable to the latest decline across the sector.
