Why drivers turn down the music when they are lost (AI image)
It is such a common driving habit that most people never question it. Why should music suddenly become distracting simply because you are trying to find a house?
The answer may have less to do with the music itself than with what your brain is doing in that moment. Finding an unfamiliar address turns an otherwise routine drive into a search task, forcing you to divide attention between traffic, navigation instructions, signs, landmarks and the destination. Research suggests that when those demands rise, the brain becomes more selective about what information it continues to process.
Why finding an address changes the way you drive
Finding an unfamiliar address is not just a matter of following a blue line on a navigation app. For a few minutes, the brain may have to process several streams of information at once.

That creates what researchers call mental workload, the amount of cognitive effort required to perform a task. And this is where the music becomes interesting.
Music can quietly add to mental effort
In a 2012 study titled “The influence of music on mental effort and driving performance,” Ayça Berfu Ünal and colleagues tested 69 participants in a driving simulator. The researchers compared driving with and without music across both monotonous and more complicated traffic situations.
They found that listening to music increased reported mental effort, although participants who listened to music performed as well as those who drove without it. The researchers suggested that drivers appeared to compensate for the additional demand rather than simply allowing their performance to deteriorate. That distinction matters.
The finding does not mean that music automatically makes someone a worse driver. Instead, it suggests that music can consume some mental resources even when a driver is perfectly capable of handling it.
When the task suddenly becomes more difficult, reducing the music may therefore feel like an easy way to reduce one source of stimulation.
Your brain may already be turning the music off
An even closer match to this everyday behaviour came from a 2013 study published in Accident Analysis & Prevention called “Blocking-out auditory distracters while driving: A cognitive strategy to reduce task-demands on the road.”
The researchers conducted two studies. In the first, 15 participants listened to radio broadcasts while watching traffic videos. In the second, 46 participants drove in a simulator through both high- and low-complexity traffic while some listened to radio broadcasts.

The drivers remembered less of the radio content than people who were not simultaneously performing the driving task. More importantly, those listening to radio remembered less talk-radio material during high-complexity traffic than during low-complexity traffic.
The researchers proposed that this “blocking-out” of irrelevant auditory information could be a cognitive strategy that helps drivers maintain performance when the road demands more attention.
So when someone reaches for the volume knob while searching for an address, they may be doing a much simpler version of the same thing: reducing attention to something that has suddenly become less important.
It may be less about the music than the search
The funny part is that the driver may not even realise why they have lowered the volume. They are not necessarily thinking, “My cognitive workload has increased, so I should reduce auditory stimulation.” They simply know that they need to concentrate and the volume knob becomes an incredibly simple solution.
Music is enjoyable when the road is familiar and the mind has spare capacity. But when the driver suddenly needs to spot “47B” among dozens of buildings while watching traffic and listening for a navigation instruction, every bit of attention feels more valuable.
So the next time someone turns down the music while hunting for an address, they may not be trying to hear the GPS better or suddenly disliking the song. They may simply be making more room to think.
