As Thanksgiving festivities unfolded across the USA and Canada, the traditional turkey-centric meal faced renewed scrutiny from advocates of veganism and animal rights, notably led by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

In an unconventional approach to raising awareness during Thanksgiving 2023, PETA shared a thought-provoking post featuring an illustration of a 'family' of turkeys dressed in clothes and holding 'hands' around a table.

Departing from the customary roasted turkey centrepiece, the depiction showcased a platter of roasted human meat on a bed of salad, accompanied by other dishes.

The accompanying caption urged viewers to reconsider the tradition with the message, "We're lucky turkeys would never do this to us - you don't have to do it to them, either."

The post, garnering over 20 million views, triggered a robust online debate encompassing criticisms, sarcastic comments, and expressions of support for the accompanying community note challenging common misconceptions about turkeys' diets.
