Pennsylvania lawmakers declare 2023 as the 'Taylor Swift Era'

Pennsylvania lawmakers have approved a proposal recognising 2023 as Pennsylvania's "Taylor Swift era."

House Resolution 282, introduced on Wednesday night, aligning with Swift's 34th birthday, narrowly passed the chamber with 103 yes votes and 100 nays. The resolution was put forth by Representatives Danielle Friel Otten, Jennifer O'Mara, Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz, Robert Freeman, Benjamin V. Sanchez, Arvind Venkat, Jose Giral, and Maureen E. Madden.

2023 was Taylor Swift's year. From Grammy win to record-breaking 'Era's tour and being crowned Time's 2023 Person of the Year, the year was full of monumental triumphs for the 33-year-old singer. On Monday, the talented American singer-songwriter received a Golden Globes nomination, providing a fitting and delightful conclusion to her remarkable year.


How Swift boosted state's economy
Pennsylvania (Taylor’s Version) has witnessed the positive impact of Taylor Swift's influence over the past year, according to sponsors. The demand for tickets to her tour prompted legislative action in the state, and beyond at a gradual pace, to address Ticketmaster’s deficiencies.

Swift has not only contributed to the local economy during her tour stops in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh but has also made donations to hunger relief organizations. Additionally, she played a role in encouraging thousands of people, particularly young individuals, to register to vote.

The resolution further acknowledged the Pennsylvania native's notable achievements this year, including being named Time Magazine's 2023 Person of the Year.

"Recognizing the year 2023 as the 'Taylor Swift Era' in Pennsylvania, in celebration of Ms. Swift's recent selection as TIME Magazine's 2023 Person of the Year and acknowledgment of her positive impact on Pennsylvania's economy, voter registration numbers, consumer protections and pro-labor practices," it reads.

It also calls her a "role model" who has brought "joy to a society desperately in need of it."

The resolution continues: "Ms. Swift shines as a role model of courage, self acceptance and self-determination, persisting in the face of personal and professional obstacles and challenges."
