Orionid Meteor Shower October 2026: Here's the peak date and best time to watch
The Orionid meteor shower will light up the night sky again this October. It is expected to reach its point on the night of October 21 and then continue into the early part of October 22. People in Indonesia might see shooting stars without needing any tools, only if the weather is good. The secret is to move from city lights and to remember when to look up at the sky, as per Aktualita.co.

Orionid meteor shower at its peak

According to the American Meteor Society, the Orionids will be active from October 2 to November 7, with the best chance of seeing them around October 21 and 22. The shower comes from debris left behind by Halley's Comet. When Earth moves through that trail of dust tiny particles enter the atmosphere. Burn up creating bright streaks in the sky.

NASA says these particles travel at 66 kilometers, per second. Under conditions you might see 10 to 20 meteors each hour.. A bright moon or city lights can make it harder to spot them.

What time can you see the Orionids in Indonesia

Late night and the hours before sunrise are your best bet. Time and Date estimates that the Moon will set in Jakarta at around 2:16 a.m. WIB on October 22. In Makassar, it is expected to set at about 2:23 a.m. WITA. That makes the time after 2:30 a.m. worth watching, provided the sky is clear.

The Moon will be fairly bright during the peak and may drown out some of the fainter meteors. Waiting until it sets could give you a better view.

Where is the best place to watch

You don't need to travel far, but try to find somewhere darker than your usual surroundings. Streetlights, tall buildings and bright phone screens can all get in the way.

People, in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Makassar can look out for the shower.

Give your eyes 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness as NASA recommends. There's no need, for a telescope. Also don't focus on the constellation Orion. Meteors can appear in parts of the sky so looking at a wider area gives you a better chance of catching one.
