No time to exercise? Even this short walk can dramatically improve your health
A new study says even short walks can improve your health. Experts say walking for just 10 to 15 minutes a day can lower health risks and boost energy. You don’t need long workouts — small steps matter. Regular walking keeps your body strong and m...

“People assume that if they don’t have a lot of time, it’s not even worth trying to squeeze in a workout,” said Stephanie Mansour, a certified personal trainer and TODAY fitness contributor. “But the truth is that completing a short workout daily can really make a difference for your health.”
Short walks can lower death risk
A new study in the Annals of Internal Medicine looked at data from over 33,500 people, with an average age of 62. All participants took 8,000 or fewer steps per day. Those who walked 15 minutes or more at a time had a lower risk of death compared to people who took the same number of steps but in walks under 15 minutes.Another earlier study found that just 11 minutes of walking every day can help prevent early death and reduce disease risk. As stated in the report by TODAY, “Our results are encouraging for those who currently do very little activity; it really makes a big difference to your health if you manage to do just a little bit,” said Søren Brage, Ph.D., co-author of the paper and head of the Physical Activity Epidemiology group at the University of Cambridge.
Even 10 to 20 minutes a day can improve your health
Another research showed that 20 minutes of extra activity per day, including walking, can reduce hospitalizations from nine different health conditions. Other studies have even found health gains from as little as 10 minutes of exercise daily.Walking regularly can:
Reduce back pain
Improve blood pressure
Maintain mobility
Boost mental health
Experts say people often skip walking because they think short walks don’t count. But any amount of activity is better than none. If you have a chance to walk — even for a few minutes — take it instead of sitting all day. There’s no “perfect” number of steps or minutes. Mixing up your walk lengths and times also brings unique benefits. So, walk longer when you can — and don’t feel bad if you walk shorter some days.
If 15 minutes feels too hard, start with whatever you can manage and slowly increase it over time. “It starts to spiral upwards. As stated by TODAY, if you’re walking for five minutes, you might increase it to 10,” said Dr. Mark A. Slabaugh, orthopedic sports medicine surgeon at Mercy Medical Center, Baltimore. “That good upward trend helps you in many different ways.”
