What did the ransom emails say
In an interview published by Newsweek on October 6, Coffindaffer said she received four emails from people claiming to be involved in Guthrie’s kidnapping. The messages demanded bitcoin and included an AI-generated photo of Guthrie.“I never responded to any of them,” Coffindaffer said. “I went straight to the FBI with them.”
The messages demanded bitcoin in exchange for Nancy Guthrie’s release and included an AI-generated image of her. Coffindaffer told Newsweek that she never replied to the emails. Instead, she immediately turned them over to the FBI.
The retired agent now believes the messages may have come from scammers, possibly the same people behind similar ransom demands sent to Guthrie’s neighbor, Lauren Serpa. Coffindaffer said she believes the emails were scams. She also thinks they may be connected to ransom demands sent to Serpa in September.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department addressed another possible ransom message on September 29. In a statement posted on X, the department said:
“The PCSD/FBI Guthrie Task Force was made aware of a new possible ransom text message related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation. After further review, investigators determined the text message is not credible.”
The department also urged people to be careful. “Scammers may attempt to take advantage of this situation. Do not send money or provide personal information in response to unsolicited messages.”
Investigators said they would continue checking messages connected to the case.
“Investigators will continue to review reported messages for credibility and investigate any potential attempts at extortion. The Nancy Guthrie investigation remains active and ongoing.”
Where does the Nancy Guthrie case stand
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills on the evening of January 31. Her whereabouts remain unknown as of now, and no suspect has been publicly identified. A masked person seen near her home in Nest doorbell camera footage around the time of her disappearance also remains at large. Savannah Guthrie has offered $1 million in reward money for information. A combined total of more than $1.2 million in reward money remains unclaimed. The case has also involved Arizona man Luke Daley, who was detained during the investigation but released without charges.
According to Fox News Digital, Daley was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Complex on September 30 2026 on unrelated charges.
“Luke Daley was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Complex on September 30, 2026,” a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesperson told Fox News Digital. “This is unrelated to the Nancy Guthrie case.”
Daley, 37, has a lengthy criminal record and prior felony convictions. On February 13, police stopped him at a Culver’s parking lot and searched his mother’s home during the Guthrie investigation.
He was released hours later without charges related to Guthrie’s disappearance.
Daley’s attorney, Chris Scileppi, said after his release, “Mr. Daley has no link whatsoever to Nancy Guthrie and has no information related to her kidnapping. Like the entire Tucson community, both Mr. Daley and his mother are hopeful that Nancy will be returned to her family unharmed.”
Daley also had pending drug and firearm charges and was on probation in another case involving drug and weapons violations. Prosecutors have asked for that probation to be revoked.
