On November 17, 1978, four workers at the Burger Chef food joint at Crawfordsville Road in Speedway went missing. These four people were – Assistant Manager Jayne Friedt (20, workers Ruth Shelton (18), Daniel Davis (16), and Mark Flemmonds (16). Two days later, their bodies were found lying near the Center Grove High School in Johnson County.
What happened in the investigation?
While police considered it to be an act of robbery, only $581 was stolen from the cash counter. When a fellow employee came back by midnight to check on the four colleagues, they were all missing. All that police could find was an empty roll of adhesive tape and two empty currency bags.
To date, the case remains unsolved as the police could never find any physical evidence. Interestingly, in 2018, about four decades after the crime, the police released a photo of a knife blade 4.5 inches in length. However, no further information could come forward to find what actually happened that night and who were the perpetrators behind the crime.
