Michigan is a battleground in 2026: An open Senate seat after Sen. Gary Peters' retirement has both parties fighting for it all in US midterm elections
Michigan is one of the biggest battlegrounds to watch in the 2026 midterm elections. The Senate race is wide open after Democratic Sen. Gary Peters decided not to seek another term. Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers are now set to face each other on Nov. 3, with the result carrying major importance for the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.

The Michigan race is also drawing attention because the state has shifted between parties in recent presidential elections.

Why is Michigan’s Senate seat so important?

Gary Peters' retirement turned the 2026 Michigan Senate race into an open-seat contest. Republicans hold a 53-45 Senate majority, according to the information provided, making every closely fought race important as both parties battle for control of the chamber, as per a report by UPI and Ballotpedia.

Michigan itself remains difficult to predict. The race also has a clear contrast between the two candidates.

El-Sayed is a public health official, epidemiologist and podcast host. He previously served as director and health officer for the Detroit Health Department and later held the same role with the Wayne County Department of Health, Human and Veterans Services.

His campaign has centered heavily on health care.

“I literally wrote the book on Medicare for All because healthcare is a human right, not a privilege. ... I will sponsor legislation to enact M4A and eliminate medical debt nationwide. M4A guarantees comprehensive coverage, eliminates co-pays and deductibles, and lowers overall costs through reducing administrative waste and negotiating drug prices.”

Rogers brings a very different background. He represented Michigan's 8th Congressional District from 2001 to 2015. He has previously served in the U.S. Army, Michigan Senate, the FBI and cybersecurity.

Rogers has made jobs, costs and national priorities central to his campaign.

“I’ll always put America and Michigan first. That means bringing manufacturing jobs back home, lowering the cost of gas, groceries, & prescription drugs, protecting seniors’ social security & medicare, and setting our kids up for success by prioritizing education not indoctrination.”

What are analysts saying about the Michigan Senate race?

The contest has attracted national attention beyond the candidates themselves. BBC's Anthony Zurcher said the election “will provide perhaps the most dramatic, high-stakes test of whether a left-wing candidate [El-Sayed] can win a general election race in a true battleground state.”

Bridge Michigan's Lauren Gibbons has also examined how El-Sayed's criticism of U.S. aid to Israel and AIPAC could affect his campaign, particularly as he seeks support from Jewish Democrats.

Gibbons wrote that continued criticism of Israel and AIPAC “could get more complicated as El-Sayed works to win Jewish Democrats.”

She also noted Rogers' close relationship with Trump, writing that “Rogers has closely aligned himself with President Donald Trump despite flagging popularity.”

The race has also become a test of what each party wants from its Michigan voters. El-Sayed is pushing a progressive health care message, while Rogers is stressing manufacturing, prices, Medicare, Social Security and education.

With an open Senate seat and both parties fighting hard for Michigan, the Nov. 3 election will be one of the races to watch as voters decide who represents the state in the next Senate.
