World Space Week 2026: Theme, history, how to celebrate and a special Pokémon twist- here's everything you need to know
World Space Week is back this October giving people over the world a chance to learn more about space without having to be a scientist or work for a space agency. The 2026 celebration takes place from Oct. 4 To Oct. 10. This years theme is "Rocket Revolution," which looks at the way rockets and space launches are changing.

The week also has a history behind it. This year there is even a Pokémon connection, with Pikachu making an appearance in the space story.

History behind World Space Week held in October

Two important moments in the history of space are specifically the origin lore of World Space Week. On Oct. 4 1957 Sputnik 1 became the human-made satellite to orbit Earth. Its launch marked the beginning of an era of space exploration.

Ten years later on Oct. 10 1967 The Outer Space Treaty started to be in effect. This agreement apparently outlined rules for the use and exploration of outer space.

The United Nations General Assembly established World Space Week back in 1999. Since then the week has been celebrated every year from Oct. 4 Through Oct. 10.

Space agencies, companies, schools, museums, planetariums and astronomy clubs take part in the grandeur celebration of this special week. Events include, but not limited to science lessons, exhibitions, astronomy activities and public talks. A main goal is to get young people interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics better known as STEM.

What is the 2026 theme, "Rocket Revolution”

The theme shows how much the launch industry has changed. For years going to orbit was mostly done by a small group of government space programs. Rockets were complicated machines and were usually built to fly only once. That situation is changing. Reusable rockets can come back to Earth. Be used again. Commercial launch companies, startups, universities and new national space programs are also joining the growing space industry.

The change could mean launches and more chances to send satellites and spacecraft into space.

It is also about the cost of getting to space. The World Space Week Association says access and lower launch prices have helped create new space applications.

Dennis Stone, president of the World Space Week Association said the theme "recognizes how more space access and lower launch prices have helped grow the space ecosystem and new space applications.”

How can you celebrate World Space Week

There are ways to take part. World Space Week events include exhibitions, talks, classroom activities, movie nights, astronomy events and hands-on STEM projects. Estes Education has also worked with World Space Week on a Rocket Revolution Toolkit for classrooms, families and clubs. You can also look up at the night sky. The Draconid meteor shower is expected to peak around October 8-9, followed by a New Moon on Oct. 10.

People can also join events. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida is planning to host a World Space Week Expo on Oct. 9 With NASA and industry partners.

What does Pokémon have to do with World Space Week

There is a pop culture addition to this years celebration. The European Space Agency and The Pokémon Company International are working together for a Europe-space-themed exhibition and a Pokémon GO event.

French astronaut Sophie Adenot also brought a Pikachu plush to the International Space Station. The partnership has exhibitions at ESA buildings and museums throughout Europe.

It is a way to get people thinking about space but it supports one of World Space Weeks main goals: getting the next generation excited, about science and exploration.

For anyone who wants to observe World Space Week without going to an event there is always the simplest option. Step look up and see what is, in the sky.
