His achievements continued at the University of California, Davis, where he was admitted at 12 to pursue his undergraduate studies. At 14, he graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering.

Abraham's academic path eventually led to a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, which he earned at 19 after successfully defending his dissertation.

How did Tanishq start so young?

Abraham was recognized as a child genius from an early age. According to the material provided, he joined Mensa when he was just 4. Membership in the high-IQ society requires testing within the upper 2% of the general population on an approved test.

His father, Bijou Abraham, previously described how the family discovered his abilities.

“We tested him and discovered that he was pretty smart,” dad Bijou Abraham previously told NBC News. “We were surprised when we started giving him advanced stuff and he was picking it up really fast.”

His education took an unusual direction from there. While still in high school, Abraham began attending community college at 7. His mother also gave up her Ph.D. to homeschool her children, according to Abraham's own account.

His rapid academic progress continued through his teenage years, eventually taking him to UC Davis.

What did he study at UC Davis?

At UC Davis, Abraham focused on biomedical engineering and later continued his studies toward a doctorate. His research centered on applying artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI, to novel microscopy techniques for digital pathology.

He conducted his research under Dr. Richard Levenson at the UC Davis Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

Abraham says he presented his work at conferences including SPIE Photonics West, an ICML workshop and BMES. He also published a book chapter and established collaborations with laboratories around the world.

After completing his dissertation, Abraham rang the bell at UC Davis, a tradition marking the completion of a student's Ph.D. He also credited his family for helping him reach that point.

“Wouldn’t have done it without the love and support of my family. Mom, who gave up her PhD to homeschool us. Dad, who juggled hectic days of work for me to achieve my dreams. Sis, who made the stressful days less stressful with her jokes,” he tweeted.

The UC Davis College of Engineering congratulated the Sacramento native on his achievements.

Where has his AI research taken him?

Abraham's work has extended beyond university research. He describes himself as a medical and generative AI researcher and CEO of Sophont, a company building open-source multimodal medical foundation models.

He was also formerly a Research Director at Stability AI, where he worked on generative and medical AI research. During his time there, he founded and led MedARC, an open-source medical AI research organization focused on training foundation models for medicine.

According to Abraham, MedARC published papers in NeurIPS, ICML and Nature Biomedical Engineering and built a community of more than 3,000 people interested in medical AI on Discord.

His work has also included open-source projects. He was part of the founding team for DALL-E mini and has contributed frequently to the fastai library. He was also involved in teaching, serving as a teaching assistant for Part 1 and instructor for Part 2 of the 2022 fast.ai course.

Before focusing on his current work, Abraham was active on Kaggle, where he earned two silver medals and two bronze medals in machine learning competitions. He also achieved Notebooks Grandmaster and Discussions Master ranks.
