JPMorgan stock (JPM) slides as Democrats plan probe into Jeffrey Epstein ties: Could bank executives face Senate scrutiny?

JPMorgan stock (JPM) today: JPMorgan Chase shares fell 4% on Thursday, joining a broader decline in bank stocks, after a report that Senate Democrats are preparing to examine the bank’s past relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

The planned investigation has brought renewed attention to how senior JPMorgan executives handled the relationship, with Mary Erdoes, CEO of the bank’s asset and wealth management division, among the executives whose decisions are expected to face scrutiny.

CNBC reported that Democrats on the Senate Finance Committee intend to investigate the matter, citing an anonymous source familiar with the committee’s thinking.

JPMorgan Stock (JPM) Falls as Senate Democrats Plan Epstein Investigation

The proposed inquiry comes after Senator Ron Wyden, a Democrat from Oregon who is expected to chair the Senate Finance Committee next year, warned that banks linked to Epstein would face scrutiny.

In a statement on Wednesday following the midterm elections, Wyden said companies and financial institutions would be required to answer questions about their role in harming Americans and enabling corruption when he takes over as committee chair.

He also posted a one-word message on social media X, “Subpoenas.”

The reported investigation would examine how JPMorgan’s senior executives managed the bank’s ties to Epstein, including decisions made by Erdoes.

JPMorgan Says It Regrets Its Association With Jeffrey Epstein

JPMorgan spokesperson referred to an earlier statement, “The U.S. government had damning information about Epstein’s crimes that it failed to share with us or other banks. We regret any association we had with him, but we did not help him commit his crimes,” as quoted by Barron's.

The bank said it regretted any association with Epstein but maintained that it did not help him commit his crimes.

CEO Jamie Dimon also addressed the relationship in an interview with Barron's earlier this year. He said he hoped JPMorgan had moved past its association with Epstein and acknowledged that mistakes had been made in maintaining the relationship.

Dimon said JPMorgan “did business with a terrible guy” and that “errors in judgment obviously were made,” as quoted in the report.
