India captain Shubman Gill will miss the crucial second Test against South Africa at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Saturday due to a neck injury sustained during the opening match. Wicketkeeper and vice-captain Rishabh Pant will lead the hosts as they aim to salvage the two-Test series.

Gill suffered neck spasms in the first innings of the opener, forcing him to withdraw from the remainder of the match and spend a night in hospital. Although he traveled with the team to Guwahati, the medical staff ruled out his participation to prevent further injury. Top-order batter Sai Sudharsan is expected to replace him, with the final XI announced at the toss.



India lost the low-scoring opener at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, being bowled out for 93 while chasing 124. This marks India’s fourth home Test defeat in six matches, following New Zealand’s rare 3-0 whitewash on Indian soil last year.

Pant, a left-handed batter, has returned to India’s squad after missing the home series against the West Indies while recovering from a foot fracture.

South Africa, aiming for their first Test series win in India since 2000 under Hansie Cronje, will be without fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, who is sidelined with a rib injury and will also miss the white-ball leg of the tour.

The visitors will play three ODIs and five T20 matches following the two Tests.
