Waiting for a mail ballot can make you wonder whether the ballot actually reached the place. That feeling of uncertainty can be stressful. California has a way to check the ballot. For the November 3 2026 General Election voters can sign up for the Secretary of State’s "Where’s My Ballot?" service. The service sends updates as the ballot moves through the process including when the ballot has been received and counted. It's reassuring to see the progress of the ballot in time.

That means voters do not have to keep guessing about what happened to the ballot after they put the ballot in the mail. It gives the ballot a path through the system, as per a report by California Secretary of State.

Where can you check your ballot

“Where’s My Ballot?" is the tracking tool offered by the California Secretary of State for the ballot. It is a way to keep track of the ballot.

Once you sign up updates can come by text message, email or voice call about the ballot. The service is powered by BallotTrax. It is meant to show voters what is happening with their vote‑by‑mail ballot.

There is another option too. The "My Voter Status" tool can be used to check whether the ballot was counted. It is another way to verify the ballot’s status.

All active registered voters in California will receive a ballot by mail for the November 3 election.

When should your ballot arrive

Counties have until October 5 to begin mailing ballots. This gives the ballot time to reach voters. Once the ballot reaches you there is no need to wait until Election Day. The ballot can be filled out. Returned as soon as you receive it. Ballot drop boxes open October 6. A voter can also return a ballot in person at a polling place or vote center. Those locations will be open from 7 a.m. To 8 p.m. On November 3. Drop the ballot off at the center when it's convenient.

If you are sending the ballot back through the mail it needs to be postmarked by Election Day. It is advised that voters mail it at least seven days ahead of November 3 and always check the postmark to make sure the ballot arrives on time.

If you end up mailing it on Election Day itself the state says to get a postmark from a postal employee inside a United States Post Office. It is an extra step that helps the ballot be counted.

What if your ballot is missing

A ballot that never arrives does not mean a voter has no options. If the original ballot is lost or damaged, a replacement ballot can be requested through the state or through the voter’s county elections office. This ensures the ballot is still counted.

Requests can be made by phone, email, fax or other electronic means. Keep a record of the request for the ballot. California also has in‑person voting options in every county. Voters looking for a drop box, polling place or vote center can use the state’s election location tool. Contact their county elections office. The ballot can always find a way to be counted.

How do you know the ballot was counted

This is where the tracking service can be especially useful. You can check the status of your ballot. After a ballot has been returned, "Where’s My Ballot?" can send notifications about its status. The updates can tell voters when the ballot has been received and when it has been counted. You can see the ballot’s process clearly.

The state also says voters can use "My Voter Status" to check whether their vote was counted. It is another source for the ballot’s final status.

Election results will start appearing after polls close at 8 p.m. On November 3. Counties will continue updating the results as they count the remaining ballots. The official certified results are scheduled to be posted by December 11 2026. The ballot’s influence will be confirmed when the official results appear.
