HEPA air purifiers may help lower blood pressure, study says
A recent study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology has revealed a new advantage of HEPA air purifiers: they may help lower blood pressure, mainly for people living in regions with high levels of traffic-related air pollution. Published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, indicates that cleaner indoor air could play an important role in cardiovascular health, providing a simple, low-cost intervention for those at danger.

Study design

The study examined 154 participants residing near highways and were frequently exposed to air pollutants from vehicle emissions. These pollutants, which have fine particulate matter (PM2.5), have long been linked with elevated cardiovascular risk, including elevated blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes.

Participants were split into two groups: one group received HEPA air purifiers for use in homes, while the other group received non-HEPA purifiers that did not efficiently filter fine particulate matter. Over a month, the researchers monitored the blood pressure and other cardiovascular signals to assess the influence of cleaner indoor air on heart health.

Significant findings

At the end of the study, researchers found that individuals using HEPA purifiers experienced a notable reduction in systolic blood pressure, averaging a reduction of 2.8 mm Hg. Conversely, the group using non-HEPA purifiers highlighted a slight increase in blood pressure during the same period.

“Resulted in a modest but significant reduction in systolic blood pressure,” which is the upper number of a reading, cites Karishma Patwa, M.D., a cardiologist with Manhattan Cardiology and LabFinder contributor.

While a change of 2.8 mm Hg might seem modest, experts indicate that even minor decreases in blood pressure can have a significant impact on cardiovascular risk. Lowering systolic blood pressure by just a few points can minimize the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other complications, particularly for people who are already at risk due to age, lifestyle, or preexisting health issues.

How does it work?

Air pollution triggers inflammation, oxidative stress, and blood vessel dysfunction, all of which leads to higher blood pressure. By removing fine particulate matter from indoor environments, HEPA purifiers minimize exposure to these harmful particles, enabling the cardiovascular system to function more effectively.

FAQs:

Q1. What is a HEPA air purifier?
A HEPA air purifier is a device that filters fine particles like dust, pollen, and pollution from indoor air. It helps in creating a cleaner and healthier breathing environment.

Q2. How can air pollution affect health?
Air pollution can cause inflammation and stress on the body, which increases the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. Over time, this can result in serious cardiovascular problems.
