One mother posted on Reddit's r/breakingmom subreddit about one such situation when her 6-year-old daughter made her cry with what she had said to her.
This mom had been going through tough times with her marriage being “on the rocks” and was also emotionally distressed. She works from home and has her workstation in the living room, where she always positions the TV in such a way that it is facing towards her all day long for some sound.
One day, she forgot to turn on the TV after completing her work. The girl asked her to position the TV because she wanted to watch something.
She apologized for forgetting. And she said, “It's alright, Mommy. You're so busy picking me up from school and Daddy from work and feeding the cat, that you just forgot. It's alright to forget.”

These words meant more to her than the situation did. She said the comment felt like recognition of the many small, often unnoticed things she does every day. More importantly, her daughter had given her something she seemingly needed at that moment: permission to make a small mistake without feeling guilty about it.
The story is a reminder that goodness does not always look extraordinary. Sometimes, it is a child choosing understanding over blame.
The girl could have simply asked her mother to move the television. Instead, she noticed everything happening around her, the school pickups, helping her father, feeding the family cat and found a reason to forgive a small lapse.
There is something powerful about that kind of kindness. People often remember the big things they did for one another, but it can be the smallest moments of consideration that make someone feel truly seen.
And perhaps that is one of the gentlest things about people: even when life is difficult, someone can still choose to make another person's day a little lighter.
