Sometimes we spend a good amount of time in our lives believing we understand why someone treats us a certain way. A cold smile feels like dislike. Silence makes it feel like they don't value us. And after enough birthdays and family gatherings, we stop wondering if there could be another reason.

One Reddit user recently discovered that the reason behind her mother-in-law's distance was far more complicated and compassionate at the same time than she had imagined.

She was given a strange box on her wedding day

The Reddit user in r/stories shared that she and her mother-in-law had never really gotten along. They remained polite, but the relationship was cold for 15 years. Then, on her wedding day, her mother-in-law pulled her aside and handed her a small wooden box.

She asked her to promise one thing: don't open it until she was gone.

She never explained why. And for the next 15 years, she never mentioned the box again. It eventually sat forgotten at the back of a closet.

The box was finally opened after her death

Last week, the woman's mother-in-law died suddenly from heart failure. After the funeral, the Reddit user kept thinking about the box. That night, she finally opened it.

Inside were a letter, a photograph and a ring. The letter began with a line that changed everything:

“You were never who I was cold to.” According to the Reddit post, the mother-in-law had mistaken her daughter-in-law for another woman who had hurt her son before they met.

The photograph inside the box showed that woman, and she looked remarkably similar to the Reddit user.

The reason behind the coldness was fear

The ring belonged to the husband's first fiancée, who had left him two weeks before their wedding for his own brother. The Reddit user said her husband had never told her about the painful history because he believed it no longer mattered.

But his mother apparently feared that history was repeating itself.

Suddenly, years of distant smiles and awkward family gatherings had a different meaning. She wasn't necessarily trying to make her daughter-in-law feel unwelcome. She had been afraid of watching her son go through the same pain again.

She still hasn't told her husband

The Reddit user said she has not shown her husband the box yet, and she doesn't know whether she will. That is perhaps the hardest part of the story.

For 15 years, she believed her mother-in-law's silence meant dislike. Only after her death did she discover that fear and an attempt to protect her son may have been hiding underneath it.
