Five American service members lost their lives in a military aircraft crash during a routine training exercise in the eastern Mediterranean. While the specific details about the aircraft type and origin were not disclosed, the accident occurred during a standard air refueling mission, the US European Command (EUCOM) reported.

"It is another stark reminder that the brave men and women who defend our great nation put their lives on the line each and every day to keep our country safe," U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said.

President Joe Biden expressed condolences, recognizing the sacrifice made by these servicemen on a weekend dedicated to honoring military veterans. He stated, "Our service members put their lives on the line for our country every day. They willingly take risks to keep the American people safe and secure."

The crash comes amidst heightened tensions in the region, with the United States deploying a carrier strike group to prevent the Israel-Hamas conflict from escalating further. This incident adds to the challenges faced by US forces in the area, which have experienced increased attacks in recent weeks. Washington has attributed the rise in violence to Tehran-backed militias and conducted strikes against Iran-linked sites in Syria.
