Disney+ triggers Japanese streaming market's expansion in Q3, says report. Details here

According to recent reports, Disney+ has overtaken Hulu Japan in the Japanese streaming market. As per an analysis by consultancy firm Media Partners Asia and its proprietary AMPD Research Platform, in the third quarter of 2022, Japan added 1.1 million net new SVOD subscriptions (there are 49.4 million SVOD subscriptions in the entire Japanese market). Apparently, the strategy of offering discounts and brand franchises helped get more people to sign up for Disney+ over the course of the quarter.

Korean dramas also played a significant part in the acquisition of Netflix and Disney+ subscribers, offering a competitive distinction among animation collections that are mostly non-exclusive. In order to differentiate its content in a sophisticated SVOD market, Disney+ is also developing its own animation collection.

The growth is important since the rest of the players witnessed flat second and third quarters. Vivek Koto, Managing Partner of Media Partners Asia, said, "Amazon Prime Video continues to lead in this area, followed by Netflix, both of which benefit from enormous non-exclusive animation libraries." In order to meet the demand for live TV and keep up with popular variety and drama, the local TV consortium and AVOD TVer platform continue to grow their share of premium video consumption.




The report also highlighted the continued value of anime in the Japanese market as well as the increasing interest in Korean content. Licensed live-action content is particularly strong on Hulu Japan and U-Next, according to the research, while Korean programming has a significant subscriber acquisition impact on Netflix and Disney+, generating an outsized 26% of new user consumption.
