A Bitcoin stash that had been sitting untouched for about 16 years has finally moved. The 100.02 BTC was mined in July 2010, when the coins were worth around $29. On October 7, the Bitcoin was transferred for the first time in roughly 16 years. At a price of about $83,000 per Bitcoin, the stash was worth around $8.3 million.

That is a very different number from what the coins were worth when they were created.

100.02 BTC Had Been Untouched Since 2010

The Bitcoin came from two mining rewards created in July 2010.

One reward contained 50.02 BTC and was mined on July 26 in block 70,522. Two days later, another 50 BTC was mined in block 70,748.

The two rewards were combined on July 30, 2010. The resulting 100.02 BTC then stayed where it was until October 7.

The Bitcoin Was Sent to Two New Addresses

The latest transaction split the stash between two new addresses.

One received 10 BTC and the other received 90.02 BTC. The transaction fee was 1,467 satoshis, worth about $1.22 at the time.

Both addresses use the bc1q format, which did not exist when the Bitcoin was mined.

The Wallet Had Been Active Before

There is a little more history behind the address.

It had previously sent 100 BTC twice in August 2015, another 100 BTC in December 2017 and 249 BTC in March 2018.

Those were different coins, though. The 100.02 BTC involved in the latest transaction had remained untouched since 2010.

Galaxy Research said the address had been active before, while the specific Bitcoin moved this week had not moved since it was mined.

The Bitcoin Has Not Been Sent Again

Decrypt reported the transaction in which the 100.02 BTC moved, but it does not reveal who owns the new addresses.

It also does not show that the coins were sold.

As of Thursday, the 10 BTC and 90.02 BTC were still sitting in their respective new addresses.

These Are “Satoshi-Era” Bitcoin

Coins mined during Bitcoin's earliest years are often referred to as “Satoshi-era” Bitcoin because they date back to the period when Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, was still active.

That description does not mean the coins belonged to Nakamoto.

There have been other examples of early Bitcoin moving after long periods of inactivity. A 50 BTC batch mined during the same early period moved in February 2025 after about 15 years. In August 2026, 49.97 BTC first received in July 2011 also moved after roughly 15 years.
