Chipotle stock surges 6% as Starbucks explores potential takeover of CMG - here's what investors need to know

CMG stock today: Chipotle stock jumped Thursday after a report that Starbucks has explored a potential takeover of the Mexican fast-casual restaurant chain.

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc shares rose as much as 8% after the report before giving back some of those gains. The stock was up about 6% later in Thursday’s trading session. Meanwhile Starbucks stock dropped around 3%.

The reported takeover interest has put Chipotle stock in focus after shares had fallen significantly since Brian Niccol left the company to become Starbucks’ chief executive.

Chipotle Stock Jumps on Starbucks Takeover Report

The sharp move in Chipotle shares came after the Financial Times reported that Starbucks had explored a possible takeover of the restaurant chain.

According to the report, Starbucks has worked with advisers in recent months on a potential proposal for Chipotle. However, there has been no confirmation that Starbucks has made a formal offer, leaving the status of any potential transaction unclear.

Brian Niccol Connection Puts Chipotle in Focus

The reported takeover interest also connects Starbucks directly with Chipotle’s former chief executive.

Brian Niccol was Chipotle’s CEO from 2018 to 2024 before moving to Starbucks. Since Niccol left Chipotle in 2024, the company’s shares have nearly halved.

The latest jump came after the report that Starbucks had explored a potential acquisition of Chipotle.

Why Chipotle Stock Has Been Under Pressure

Chipotle has been dealing with softer customer traffic as well as higher food and labor costs, the company had nearly 4,000 restaurants in the US and about 100 international locations at the end of last year.

The reported Starbucks interest also comes as Chipotle has been looking to expand internationally. Analysts cited in the reports said Starbucks’ global footprint and licensed partnerships could potentially help Chipotle accelerate its international expansion.

Jim Sanderson, an analyst at Northcoast Research, said "What I like about this potential is the opportunity CEO Brian Niccol would have to leverage Starbucks' licensed partnerships in Europe to expand Chipotle more aggressively," as quoted by Reuters.

Chipotle and Starbucks Market Values

The two companies have different market values. As per a Reuters report, Chipotle was valued at about $39 billion and Starbucks had a market value of roughly $107 billion.
