Tax brackets 2027: A bigger share of your income could escape higher federal tax rates in 2027 as the IRS raises the income thresholds across all seven tax brackets and increases the standard deduction. The changes will affect single taxpayers, married couples, families and retirees, with higher limits also applying to long-term capital gains.

What are the new federal income tax brackets for 2027

The seven federal income tax rates will remain unchanged in 2027, ranging from 10% to 37%. However taxpayers will be able to earn more taxable income before reaching the next rate.

The IRS announced the new thresholds on November 5, through Revenue Procedure 2026-35, which covers annual inflation adjustments for nearly 70 tax provisions. The new figures apply to income earned during 2027.

These are marginal tax rates, meaning taxpayers pay each percentage only on the portion of taxable income falling within that bracket. Someone entering the 22% bracket does not pay 22% on their entire income.

USA Today also reported that the higher thresholds could allow Americans to earn more before moving into a higher federal tax rate when they file their 2027 returns in 2028.

2027 vs 2026 tax brackets: How much have the income thresholds increased

The changes raise the amount of taxable income taxpayers can receive before reaching the next bracket.

So single filers will see the upper limit of the 12% bracket increase from $50,400 in 2026 to $52,025 in 2027. The upper limit of the 22% bracket will move from $105,700 to $109,125.

Married couples filing jointly will have their 12% bracket extend to $104,050. Compared with $100,800 in 2026. Their 22% bracket will reach $218,250 up from $211,400.

The top 37% rate will begin above $661,375 for single taxpayers. Compared with $640,600 in 2026. Married couples filing jointly will reach that rate above $793,650 up from $768,700.

The annual adjustments account for inflation. The federal income tax rates themselves have not changed.

What is the standard deduction for 2027 by filing status

Standard deduction is increasing across all four filing categories, allowing taxpayers to subtract more income before calculating their federal tax liability.

Married couples filing jointly will receive additional $1,000 deduction. Single taxpayers & those filing separately will get another $500. Heads of household will see their deduction increase by $775.

Taxpayers can generally choose between the standard deduction and itemizing eligible expenses. The option that provides the larger deduction can reduce their taxable income.

What additional deductions can seniors and blind taxpayers claim in 2027

Taxpayers aged 65/ older and those who are legally blind can claim an additional standard deduction.

The 2027 amount is $1,700. It increases to $2,100 for an individual who is also unmarried & not a surviving spouse. Eligible taxpayers who qualify under both age and blindness provisions can receive additional deductions for each qualifying condition.

Older Americans can also claim a separate deduction of up to $6,000 under the Working Families Tax Cuts. This is not an inflation-adjusted amount announced in November. It is a separate provision available for tax years 2025 through 2028.

Eligible individuals age 65/older can claim up to $6000 and married couples filing jointly can receive up to $12000 if both spouses qualify. The deduction is available whether taxpayers claim the standard deduction/itemize.

The benefit begins phasing out when modified adjusted gross income exceeds $75,000 for single filers. And $150,000 for married couples filing jointly.

What are the 2027 capital gains tax thresholds and how do they differ from income tax brackets

Investors will also face higher income thresholds for long-term capital gains taxes in 2027. These rates generally apply to profits from assets held for more than one year.

0% rate applies to qualifying long-term capital gains when taxable income remains within the first threshold. The 15% rate applies above that limit and 20% rate applies once taxable income exceeds the upper threshold.

Unlike ordinary income tax brackets, long term capital gains have their own preferential rates. As per CNBC report, the higher thresholds could give investors more room to sell profitable investments or rebalance their portfolios before moving into a higher capital gains rate.

How are the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit changing in 2027

Families will also see higher tax credit limits. Maximum Child Tax Credit will increase to $2300 per qualifying child in 2027. Up $100 from 2026. The refundable portion will rise to $1,800. Also an increase of $100.

The maximum Earned Income Tax Credit will reach $8496 for eligible taxpayers with three or more qualifying children. Compared with $8231 in 2026. But the actual amount available will depend on household income, filing status & eligibility.

What other 2027 IRS adjustments affect families, workers and investors

Several other federal tax provisions will receive higher limits in 2027.

Estate tax exclusion will increase to $15.48 million, up from $15 million in 2026. And annual gift tax exclusion will rise from $19,000 to $20,000 per recipient.

The alternative minimum tax exemption will increase to $93000 for unmarried individuals. And $144700 for married couples filing jointly. The exemption begins phasing out at $515950 for unmarried taxpayers & $1031900 for joint filers.

When do the 2027 tax brackets take effect and which tax return uses them

The new brackets and deductions apply to income earned between January 1 and December 31, 2027. Americans will use these figures when filing their 2027 federal income tax returns in 2028.

They will not apply to 2026 tax returns filed during 2027 tax season. Those returns will continue to use the 2026 tax brackets and deduction amounts.
