Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle, usually caused by a virus. It impairs the heart's ability to pump blood and can potentially lead to serious health complications. Chest pains, palpitations, and shortness of breath are some of its symptoms. In rare cases, it can lead to scarring of muscles if the inflammation becomes severe, which can lead to disruption of the heart’s electrical activity, increasing the risk of heart attack or stroke.
He said, "I wear WHOOP and monitor my heart rate variability and heart rate, and obviously, coming down the line, some other things that can help me.”
"With myocarditis, if you're not hydrated enough or not getting enough magnesium, your heart can have little arrhythmias that can be worrisome. To be able to keep on top of that just gives me peace of mind," he added.
He also revealed that in 2018, he had a severe infection in China, which was followed by regular medical check-ups to monitor his heart.
McIlroy won the Masters on April 13 in an intense playoff at Augusta, completing a career Grand Slam. It was a long wait of 11 arduous years. With this win, he joined legends like Tiger Woods, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, and Jack Nicklaus in achieving the milestone of winning all four golf majors.
