That does not mean a short beach walk automatically beats an hour at the gym. But it does explain why a stroll across soft sand can leave your legs feeling surprisingly tired.

Why does walking on sand burn more energy?
The biggest difference is what happens beneath your feet On pavement or another firm surface, the ground provides a stable platform with every step. Your body can move forward relatively efficiently, with some of the energy from one part of your stride helping the next.Sand changes that equation. Your feet sink into the surface, grains move around and some of the energy you produce is effectively spent shifting and deforming the sand rather than moving your body forward. That makes walking more demanding.

A 1998 study published in the Journal of Experimental Biology found that walking on dry sand required 2.1 to 2.7 times more metabolic energy than walking on a hard surface at the same speed.
An earlier study also found a substantial increase, with walking on sand costing about 1.8 times more energy than walking on compact terrain.
Does a 30-minute beach walk beat an hour at the gym?

So there is no scientific basis for saying that 30 minutes on the beach is universally more effective than an hour at the gym.
What the research does show is much simpler: walking on loose sand can make the same walking speed significantly more energy-intensive than walking on firm ground.
And there is another important detail. The studies compare walking at the same speed. In real life, people often slow down when they reach deep or loose sand. That can reduce the difference in energy expenditure per minute.
Dry sand and wet sand are not the same
Not every beach walk creates the same workout. Deep, dry sand tends to give way beneath your feet, while wet, compact sand near the waterline is much firmer. The slope of the beach, walking speed and how deeply your feet sink can all affect how difficult the walk becomes.This is why a leisurely walk beside the water may feel very different from trudging through soft sand farther up the beach.
Is barefoot beach walking better?
Going barefoot can change how your feet move and how you interact with the ground, but it should not automatically be considered an added fitness benefit.Soft or uneven surfaces can place extra demands on the ankles, arches and lower legs. People who are not accustomed to sand walking may also be more vulnerable to discomfort or injury.
If you want to make an ordinary walk more challenging, loose sand can naturally increase the energy cost of walking. But it is better viewed as a tougher walking workout—not a replacement for every type of gym exercise.
And perhaps that is the most useful takeaway: sometimes, making a workout harder does not require more equipment. Changing the surface beneath your feet can be enough.
