The ‘Japanese sauna’ dome works by increasing the user's core body temperature rather than the air around them, like a classic sauna does.
Imagine laying down in a magic pod for a half-hour and coming out younger, lighter and a lot more relaxed. Sounds like a dream but it is a reality. The Iyashi Dôme, a “Japanese sauna” promises not just to improve sleep and hydrate your skin but can also promote muscle recovery and even help you lose weight.

Inspired by Suna Ryoho, the age-old Japanese practice of detoxifying the body in hot sand baths made popular in Ibusuki, Iyashi Dôme uses infrared rays to penetrate the skin. There are only 800 Iyashi Dômes in the entire world this treatment is one of the rarer sauna experiences on offer, mostly in high-end hotels in Paris and Dubai. And there are just two in New York City, both inside Manhattan’s Reforme spa.

Japanese sauna dome can help you burn calories

The ‘Japanese sauna’ dome works by increasing the user's core body temperature rather than the air around them, like a classic sauna does. Consisting of a wooden table with a cylindrical lid that covers your entire body, the Iyashi Dôme also allows users to fully lie down, something that’s a little trickier in regular saunas.

Instead of the traditional sauna with wooden benches and dry heat, this setup is a single-person bed with a dome that warms your body using infrared radiation. Infrared saunas have been linked to multiple of health benefits, including better heart health, blood pressure, sleep and relaxation. They can also soothe sore muscles and ease pain, boost lung function and immunity, and may even lower your risk of dementia, reports The New York Post.

As for the Iyashi Dôme, the company says it’s both slimming and anti-aging — and one 30-min Iyashi Dôme session is equivalent to a roughly 12-mile run, getting rid of 40 ounces of sweat and 600 calories.

What's the cost?

The Iyashi Dôme Japanese sauna at Reforme charges $150 per session, and inside the dome, you can go totally naked with complete privacy. Second, you’re not sitting uncomfortably on a wooden bench, but laying down on a cushioned, towel-covered bed.

Designed by Shogoro Uemura, the high-technology Japanese dome uses infrared rays to penetrate the skin's deepest layers helping cells repair and regenerate. According to Uemura, just 30 minutes in the dome is enough to give the body a ‘deep detox, is the equivalent of running 20kms, eliminates 600 kilocalories, and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.’
