Nvidia has solidified its position as a global leader in AI chip technology, holding an estimated 90% market share in the sector as of June 2024, according to Bloomberg. This growth has propelled Nvidia to become the world’s third most valuable company, behind only Apple and Microsoft, based on data from Companiesmarketcap.

Jensen Huang’s Remarkable Wealth Growth

Nvidia’s success has translated directly into a significant increase in wealth for its CEO and co-founder, Jensen Huang. The Bloomberg Billionaires Index reported a $76 billion rise in Huang’s net worth in 2024, bringing his total to $117 billion. "Huang’s wealth growth has outpaced notable figures such as Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, whose net worth increased by $70 billion this year," stated Bloomberg.

A Year of Unprecedented AI Demand

Nvidia’s pivotal role in the AI boom stems from its groundbreaking GPUs, essential for training advanced AI models. The company introduced its first AI-based services in 2012 with the AlexNet neural network, which could classify images into 1,000 categories. Nvidia’s ongoing innovation has powered generative AI, cloud computing, and other transformative technologies.

In October 2024, the company reached a market capitalisation of $3.53 trillion, briefly surpassing Apple at $3.52 trillion. Nvidia’s stock value soared 18% in the same month, driven by strong demand for its AI chips and a $6.6 billion funding round announced by OpenAI.

Comparison Among Billionaires

Huang’s $117 billion net worth places him among the top wealth gainers of 2024, second only to Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. Musk’s net worth surged by $226 billion to $455 billion, the highest among global billionaires. Mark Zuckerberg saw an increase of $91 billion, raising his net worth to $219 billion.

"Elon Musk became the first person to surpass a $400 billion net worth this year, driven by Tesla’s success and SpaceX’s growth," highlighted the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Similarly, Meta’s stock rally—up 78% in 2024—helped Zuckerberg’s fortune climb.

Nvidia’s stock performance remains a key driver of Huang’s wealth. Shares climbed 177% in 2024, following a 240% increase in 2023. Huang, who owns a 3.5% stake in the company through family trusts, has benefitted immensely from this growth.

The Road Ahead for Nvidia

Founded in 1993 by Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem, Nvidia has grown from a GPU developer into a dominant force in AI technology. Its leadership in the semiconductor and AI sectors positions it to shape the future of global tech innovation. As demand for AI solutions accelerates, Nvidia’s growth trajectory shows no signs of slowing under Huang’s guidance.
