When Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis moved into their Los Angeles farmhouse, they had no idea a global pandemic was just months away. The couple had envisioned a sustainable family home, but the COVID-19 shutdown gave them a new perspective on the value of having a self-sufficient property.

The couple, who married in 2015, spent five years turning their vision of a family farmhouse into reality. “We had this grand idea and then we moved in four months before COVID hit. We didn’t realize how incredible it was to have a fully sustainable house until the world shut down,” Kunis told C Magazine earlier.

A farmhouse built from scratch

Despite being newly constructed, the property was deliberately designed to look as though it had been there for decades. Kutcher and Kunis wanted an authentic rustic appearance, using wood, glass and concrete throughout the property.


Rather than simply moving into an existing luxury home, the couple worked closely with their architects and designers to create the six-acre property from scratch, combining a rustic farmhouse aesthetic with sustainable features.

As per a report of Hommes Studio, the couple worked with architect Howard Backen and interior designer Vicky Charles on the project and remained actively involved in the design and construction process. The finished property includes a main house connected to an entertainment barn and a separate barbecue pavilion, all arranged along a central axis.

The project began with the couple creating Pinterest mood boards before settling on Backen as their architect. They remained involved throughout the five-year design and construction process, wanting to create a home that reflected their vision for their family.

Solar power runs the property

Sustainability was a major consideration from the beginning. The entire property operates on solar-powered energy, with the solar system producing enough electricity to sustain the estate.

The couple's ambitions went beyond simply installing solar panels. One of their goals was to generate enough energy to go beyond current requirements and eventually have the ability to distribute their own energy locally.

The farmhouse was therefore designed not merely to consume energy, but to generate it — making renewable energy a central part of the property.

Reclaimed materials add another layer of sustainability

Renewable energy was only one part of the couple's approach. The timber used in the property's construction was salvaged from an old Wonder Bread factory, giving the newly built farmhouse a distinctive connection to the past while reusing existing materials.

The property also includes a sprawling garden where the family grows and harvests food, including squash, tomatoes, lettuce and other produce. Apple trees also line the grounds.

The farm has become a family affair, with Kutcher and Kunis involving their children in growing food and teaching them about where it comes from and how much work goes into producing it.

After spending five years building the property, the couple ended up with more than a luxury Los Angeles farmhouse. They created a home where solar energy, reclaimed materials and home-grown food are integrated into everyday family life.

Kutcher and Kunis purchased their first home together in Beverly Hills for approximately $10.25 million in 2014, while they were still engaged. The East Coast-inspired, three-story home in the Hidden Valley neighborhood has five bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms across 7,351 square feet. They eventually sold it in early 2022 for $10.35 million.

In 2017, Kutcher and Kunis acquired a beach house just outside Santa Barbara for $10 million. The property features a guesthouse and a main house with six bedrooms and six bathrooms, decorated in a classic California coastal style. The two structures have a combined living space of approximately 3,100 square feet and sit directly overlooking the beach.
