Friday afternoon is typically when most employees begin to wind down, go through their final emails, and mentally shift into weekend mode. However, for one Reddit user, that comfortable afternoon before a two-off day becomes something quite different.

A worker on Reddit's r/work posted that their manager has repeatedly been setting up 30-minute "quick sync" meetings at around 4:45 PM every Friday. At first, it seemed like a one-time slip, but it has since turned into a weekly routine, with the most recent meeting even scheduled for 4:50 PM.

The employee said they asked the manager whether the meeting could be shifted to Monday morning instead, since most of the team signs off around 5 PM. The reply was: "It's just a quick check-in, shouldn't take long."

It did not. According to the Reddit user, the meeting that was meant to last 30 minutes ran for 45 minutes. They said they are fine with staying late when there is a real deadline or emergency, but this feels different because there seems to be no urgent matter driving the meetings.

Why are employees calling it a 'Friday ambush'?

The timing appears to be the main problem. The employee said the topics covered could easily be put off until Monday, while the tone of the meetings stays "weirdly formal" even though they are set right before the weekend.

Some coworkers have even begun referring to it as the "Friday ambush." Even so, no one seems willing to confront the manager directly.

The Reddit user said they enjoy their job and don't want to become "the person who complains about a 30-minute meeting." But the recurring late-Friday meetings are starting to affect their mood as the weekend approaches.

Reddit has a few theories about the manager's motive

The comments provided various explanations for this unusual scheduling habit. One commenter proposed that the manager might be procrastinating all week and then using Friday afternoon to see what actually got done.

"To me, it sounds like they're avoiding work all week until they wonder what was supposed to happen this week," the commenter wrote, while also acknowledging that it could be a power move.

They proposed that the employee could stay ahead of the pattern by suggesting a standing Friday morning check-in instead. According to them, this would allow the team time to wrap up anything still outstanding before the week ended.

A different commenter offered a rather less generous theory. They proposed that the manager may just have “nothing else in her life besides work” and wants to ensure employees aren't clocking out early on Fridays. Naturally, neither explanation can be verified from the Reddit post.
