The phenomenon is known as the Hawthorne Effect, a term associated with studies conducted at Western Electric’s Hawthorne Works in Cicero, Illinois, during the 1920s and 1930s. Early interpretations suggested that workers’ productivity improved when they knew they were being observed, leading later researchers to propose that simply being part of a study and receiving increased attention from peer researchers could temporarily boost worker performance.

However, later scholars questioned whether observation alone caused these changes, and a 2009 experiment by the University of Chicago found that the results of the original Hawthorne experiments were likely overstated.


How observation influences performance


The law behind it is simple: people modify their behavior when they know they are under observation. At its core, the Hawthorne Effect shows that observation itself can influence outcomes. It’s not the changes in environment that matter most, but the perception of attention. When individuals feel noticed, they often put in more effort, leading to temporary boosts in performance.
